Much like men's razors, hair clippers are an essential part of household appliances. We know that there are two core components of electric hair clipper, one is the cutter head, the other is its motor. Generally speaking, there are three types of motors, including pivot motors, rotary motors and magneto motors. What are the differences between them?

Magnetic motor has the characteristics of reliable power and large cutting amount, so its blade speed is high. This type has less power than the other two, but is suitable for home use.

The pivot motor has high power, but the blade speed is low, which is suitable for professional hair stylist to cut thick, heavy and wet hair.

Among the three motor types, rotary motor clipper or rotary motor trimmer has the most power and has AC and DC power units. It can be classified by its higher torque, equal power and slower blade speed. It is the most powerful hair clippers or trimmers on market. So, it is an ideal tool for bulk hair removal applications such as dog hairs or horse hairs etc.

The faster the motor speed of the electric hair clipper, the greater the power. General hair clippers are low-power electrical appliances, so their motors mostly use DC micro motors. Considering the price, many manufacturers produce brush motors. There are also some manufacturers that have developed and produced two series of hair clipper products: brush and brushless motor. Brushless motors have many advantages over other types of motors traditionally used in hair clippers and hair trimmers. The brushless motor creates less friction and so is more powerful, efficient and reliable.

What makes a brushless motor different?

Brushless motors are designed for professionals wanting to invest in tough tools that last. Brushless motors significantly extend clipper motor lifetime (up to 10 to 12 times). Brushless motors are both lighter weight and run quieter. The power efficiency is improved, around 85% to 90% efficiency versus brush motors at 75% to 80%. They offer increased torque. With no brushes to wear out that means lower maintenance. A brushless motor also runs smoother with less friction for reduced heat.
